Grapes Grown by Guillermo Contador in La Union , New Mexico
Appearance:
Brilliant pale straw with flashes of gold; moderate viscosity suggesting richness.
Nose:
Intensely aromatic and unmistakably Gewürztraminer. Bursting with lychee, rose petals, and honeysuckle, followed by citrus peel, tropical fruit (think passionfruit and guava), and delicate hints of ginger, white pepper, and cardamom. A faint mineral edge—like crushed granite—grounds the bouquet.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a lush, oily texture balanced by surprising freshness (a hallmark of New Mexico’s cool desert nights). The palate mirrors the nose with juicy lychee, ripe pear, and candied ginger, evolving into notes of bergamot, mango, and a touch of honeycomb.
Texture & Structure:
Smooth and silky, with medium acidity and low to moderate alcohol (typically 12.5%–13.5%). Can be off-dry or dry depending on producer—both styles benefit from the grape’s natural aromatics and weight.
Finish:
Long and aromatic, leaving traces of spice, rosewater, and a touch of salinity, evoking the New Mexican desert’s wind-swept freshness.
Style Notes:
While Gewürztraminer is traditionally associated with Alsace, New Mexico’s high elevation and diurnal swings give the wine an energetic lift while preserving the grape’s exotic core. Exceptional examples manage to stay vibrant without losing richness.
